Pacing Event - VTE Reductions - A Data-Based Approach

On June 8, the Partnership for Patients Pacing Event focused on VTE prevention. The event examined a data-oriented approach focused on high reliability that can facilitate the reduction of already-low VTE rates. The event discussed “measure-vention” and “real-time” data reporting as interventions for reducing VTE rates. The discussion also included perspectives and examples about measures, data validation, population identification, and patient and family engagement. Specifically, the session included presentation and perspectives from:

  • Kim Werkmeister, RN, BA, CPHQ, CPPS, Clinical Improvement Educator, HQI Institute (HSAG HIIN), who provided an overview of measure-vention as an approach to reducing VTEs through high reliability, including strategies for validating real-time data and the importance of engaging patients, families, and front-line staff in developing a true understanding of the data;

  • Jennifer Tucker, BSN, RN, Clinical Quality Specialist, Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health, who discussed the system’s VTE reduction journey, including implementing a hard stop, examining how hospital-acquired clots are measured, the development of a real-time data tool, and conducing a deeper dive into the data to identify trends in the patient population; and

  • Eric O’Connor, a patient advocate with the National Blood Clot Alliance, who shared his story and discussed the importance of patient and family member awareness and education as a strategy for VTE prevention.

I strongly recommend you listen and learn. The session's slides and recording can be found here:
